5 Reasons to Maximize Your Dental Insurance Before the End of the Year

Did you just learn that you’re in need of a porcelain dental crown to protect your weakened tooth? Maybe you discovered a root canal is the preferred treatment to save your tooth from extraction? No matter what type of dental work you’re preparing for, your dental insurance can help in minimizing your costs. But don’t wait until after the new year to schedule your procedure. A dentist in Richardson shares 5 reasons you should maximize your dental insurance before the year ends.

Allotted Amount: Yearly Maximums

Every dental insurance policy has a yearly maximum. This is the designated amount the insurance company agrees to pay during a calendar year (January 1 – December 31). Throughout this timeframe, they will assist with preventive care and minor or major restorative services; however, should you go over your yearly allotment, you are responsible for paying what the insurance company will not.

If you’re in need of extensive dental work and have already met your deductible, it is in your best interest to have a procedure done prior to the end of the year. The reason is that once January 1 arrives, everything is reset and none of your benefits rollover. If you’re unsure of your yearly maximum, speak to a team member in the dentist office, and ask them to review your policy with you. This will help you make the right decision about your treatment.

Out-of-Pocket Expenses: Deductibles

Deductibles are the out-of-pocket expenses you are expected to pay to your dentist before insurance will pay for any type of service. As we mentioned earlier, if you reach your deductible, you’ll want to take advantage of the time you have left in the year to have any procedure completed because the insurance company is now responsible for paying part of the bill.

Monthly Responsibility: Premiums

In order to have dental insurance, you must agree to pay a monthly premium. This is the amount you will pay each month in order to have access to your dental benefits. If you’re paying for something, it’s best that you use it. If you don’t, you’ll lose it, and everything will start over January 1, so stop putting off getting help for that nagging toothache and seek the necessary treatment.

Possibility of Extensive Treatment: Worsening Oral Health Problems

All dentists have one goal, and that is to ensure each patient achieves a healthy smile. When you forgo seeing your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings, or you put off treatment, this can lead to necessary extensive treatment and more money out of your pocket to fix worsening dental problems.

You’re paying for insurance either through your employer or individually. No matter which way, it is yours and can be used to your advantage. Take the time to review your coverage and better understand how to use your benefits. Don’t be afraid to talk to a member of your dental team about clarification, as they are the experts who can help you get the most from your dental insurance.
