What is a Dental Crown?
When a decayed or damaged tooth requires repair, a dental crown is usually recommended. If bacteria spread into the dentin layer of a tooth, or the structure becomes badly damaged as a result of facial trauma, these customized restorations can be created to offer maximum support and protection against future infection and damage.
Also referred to as “caps,” dental crowns can be made using a variety of materials; however, Dr. Richards and our team enjoy creating lifelike smiles using natural-looking materials.
The Dental Crown Process
Dental crowns can be crafted two ways: In a lab by technicians or in-house using our milling unit. The first option typically takes two weeks for the final restoration to be put into place, and the second option crafts a customized crown while you wait.
No matter which method you choose, you can trust that your dental crown will look and feel great inside your smile, making it nearly impossible for anyone to tell the difference between your real and artificial teeth.
After clearing away the decayed or damaged areas of the tooth, Dr. Richards will fill it to seal off any future bacteria attempting to penetrate the tooth. If you opt to have a crown created outside of our office, we will alter the tooth and apply a temporary for you to wear in the meantime. When ready, you’ll return to our office to have your finalized crown put into place.
If you choose to have your crown created in-house, your dentist in Richardson will complete the same process as well as capture impressions and send them to our CEREC machine. Using advanced dental technology, this device allows for optimal results that are generated in just one visit to our office. Instead of coming back to receive the finalized crown, you’ll avoid having to wear a temporary and instead, receive your crown in just hours.
